Can you take an electric suitcase on a plane?
It's the question we hear most. The short answer: usually yes, as long as the battery meets lithium battery rules and your airline accepts it. Here's what to check before you fly.
It's all about the battery
Airlines don't object to the motor — it's the lithium battery that matters. Civil aviation rules (based on IATA regulations) classify batteries by their energy, measured in watt-hours (Wh). Batteries up to 100 Wh are usually allowed in the cabin; between 100 and 160 Wh they normally need airline approval; above 160 Wh they are not accepted on passenger flights.
Since 2018, many airlines also require smart and electric suitcases to have a removable battery, so it can be taken out if the suitcase has to go in the hold.
The TrolleyMax battery is removable and small: you take it out in moments and carry it in your hand luggage.
What to do before you fly
- Check your airline's policy on smart luggage and lithium batteries: each airline may have its own rules.
- Keep the battery details (capacity in Wh) handy. Ask us for the TrolleyMax spec sheet and we'll send it so you can show it to the airline.
- If the suitcase goes in the hold, remove the battery and take it with you in the cabin.
- Carry the battery half-charged and protected, with no exposed contacts.
- Arrive at security with time to spare in case they have questions.
Inside the airport
In many airports you can ride the suitcase around the terminal, but always carefully and at low speed around people. Follow staff instructions: in some areas you may be asked to pull it instead.
Our advice
Before every trip, check your airline's rules and carry the battery spec sheet. That way, travelling with your electric suitcase is as easy as with any other carry-on.
